Friday 10.00 – 12.00 £80 NEW Alison Jones
Term 1. Germany and USA, 1918-1939 We will be studying the fascinating histories of these two countries. In the case of Germany we will look at the Weimar Republic, the rise of Hitler and the abandonment of democracy for dictatorship. We will focus on the impact of these changes on the people, economy, and key institutions of Germany. Similarly, we will analyse how far democracy operated in the USA and how it impacted on different sections of society. The causes and impact of key events, such as economic change, the dustbowl, prohibition and gangsterism, will be studied. The history of these two countries in the interwar period is very relevant, stimulating and thought-provoking.
