‘A Doll’s House’ and ‘An Enemy of the People’ Henrik Ibsen is one of the most important playwrights since Shakespeare. His collection of dramas in the late 1800s altered the way we think about human motivation and his innovative ideas about staging and acting paved the way for modern performance in the theatre but also film and TV. The two plays on offer here will allow us to consider the startling impact of the playwright: in ‘A Doll’s House’ the extraordinary ending caused outrage and scandal; in ‘An Enemy of the People’ the political ramifications of civic subterfuge are still replicated today.
