Kill and Cure

A History of Ailments and Medicines Through the Ages.
In Ancient Greece, the word 'pharmakos' meant both poison and remedy: kill and cure were apparently indistinguishable and the god Apollo was thought to be the bringer of health and the sender of disease. Today there are concerns about our use of antibiotics: a miracle drug one day and a killer the next. This is just one of the many threads we will follow over three terms as we try to assess both the impact of disease, and our responses to it, through time.
