Introduction to Egyptology

This course will focus on what Egyptologists study and how they do this, examining significant finds and key concepts. Archaeological discoveries in the 19th Century were the impetus for research. We will consider how the discipline has developed.  Topics covered will be why and how the ancient Egyptians mummified the deceased, the use of language, including hieroglyphs, the pantheon of gods, incorporating both human and animal features, temples and art. No prior knowledge is required, just an inquisitive mind. Museum trips are included, which provide the opportunity to actually handle objects from ancient Egypt.
