Blues and Soul

'Blues and Soul': this course will explore the varying histories of the African American popular music traditions of blues, rhythm & blues and soul music and consider how they have been hugely influential on the entire corpus of popular music. We will start with the pre-blues minstrelsy era and move forward via specific case studies concerning the growth and development of blues via the internal migration of Black Americans, blues' successes with white record-buying audiences in the 1920s, and the significance of post-war Britain in the growing popularity of blues, rhythm and blues and (by the 1960s) soul music. Key artists such as Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Muddy Waters, Jackie Wilson, together with businessmen such as Ahmet Ertegun and Berry Gordy will be discussed.
