Following the footsteps of Victorian travellers, this course will visit the tombs and temples of ancient Egypt. We will begin our excursion at the Abydos, the magnificent temples built by New Kingdom rulers, Seti I and his son Rameses II. We will sail onto Dendera, the fantastic Greco-Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Hathor. We will then dock at Thebes, (modern day Luxor), where will we spend the remainder of the trip, visiting the great temple of Karnak, Valley of the Kings and some lesser known sites. Archaeological evidence, travelogues, and paintings of earlier adventurers will be considered. A handling session and a visit to the archive, both at the University of Liverpool, are included.
