By drawing upon several important popular music genres (e.g. rock ‘n’ roll, folk, blues, jazz, R&B, etc.), scenes and technological developments, this three term course will trace the growing musical and social significance of popular music in Britain throughout the post-WWII era. It will also consider the British music industry via discussions on major labels such as EMI, Decca, etc., independents such as Island and Topic, together with the importance of the media (print, radio, TV, film), and include local and national case studies surrounding youth cultures, fashions, venues and scenes. Plenty of musical and audio-visual examples included and field trips in the third term.
