Family History

These courses will offer the family historian guidance and advice on how to use the vast array of genealogy records available.

♦ Please note - when you see this against a course, it means that it runs for three terms beginning in September. New learners should not enrol after that term.  All other courses may be joined at any term.

Available Classes

♦ Family History - Beginners

This (third) term of the course will offer the family historian guidance and advice as to how to utilise, in depth the parish record, diocesan records and other non-conformist registers.  We will learn how to access wills and probate, manorial records together with advice on researching a range of 18th and 17th century records which are useful to the family historian and how to work with your family tree.

Advanced Steps in Genealogy

This course is ideal for established family historians seeking to advance their research skills and knowledge.  Whilst re-visiting familiar topics such as BMD, social and military records, there will be a greater emphasis on how to use records to their fullest, examining records you will not yet have encountered and deciphering old handwriting.  There will be more opportunity to discuss your ‘brick walls’ and gain advice from the tutor and your peer group.
